About the photographer

I am a professor of biology at the Université de Moncton, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. You can click here for my academic page.

Photography has been one of my main hobbies since 1991, essentially since I became a member of the Focus Camera Club in Moncton. Belonging to a photo club does wonders for your photography. There are of course the technical tips that you can learn from invited speakers or in conversation with fellow members. Even more important is the inspiration and increased motivation to go out there and take pictures. I have especially benefited from the regular contests that the club holds, almost all of which follow specific themes. These contests have forced me to get out of the house and think about where to go to maximize the chances of getting a picture that fitted the theme. Of course, once out there, I often ended up taking pictures of other nice scenes or events. Give yourself themes to work with if you need to motivate yourself in your photographic endeavours!

One instance in which I don't need a theme to motivate myself is when I travel. Like many people I almost always have a camera with me then. I even take the trouble to bring my tripod with me (well, most of the time). I am particularly partial to landscape photography, and travel is quite compatible with that. That's probably why I decided to organize this site according to the geographical provenance of the photos. You will notice however that I don't necessarily travel very far from home; there are nice pictures to be had anywhere.

Beyond the knowledge acquired at photo club meetings, I am mostly self-taught. I have particularly enjoyed the instructional and inspirational books published by Freeman Patterson, John Shaw, and Galen Rowell.
